There is a bit more optimism in Pastoralia than in Civilwarland--characters, however damaged they may be, do not inevitably make cringe-worthy wrong choices (although plenty get made along the way). | Here, two characters are a part of a primitive cave man display where they must prepare food over an open fire (when they receive a goat or a hare). And even though all this makes Margery a town pariah, Alice quickly grows to like her. The stories in "Pastoralia" center on eccentricly flawed characters teetering on the brink of making a decision. The shorter stories taken from the protagonist point of view, whether its a 10 year old kid riding his bike in a cloud of confusion as he tries to sort out his vision of his neighborhood just before another disarming event or a guy walking along a river so absorbed in his own thoughts not realizing a disaster just passed him by, man, this is all food for thought. Though his sensibility is easy to spot, it's nearly impossible to pick out his voice.
