Elevator to the Gallows feels like a bridge between American and European film noir in a way, neither exposition-heavy like Hollywood fare nor confusing and existential like Old World cinema. Directed by Louis Malle in 1957 based on the novel by Noël Calef, this French thriller depicts an amazingly and amusingly contrived murder-mistery combined with a now legendary score by Miles Davis. Julien races back into the building to retrieve the incriminating item; however, as he’s riding up in the elevator, a maintenance worker turns the power off, trapping him between floors. Though the shifting pace can be a little hard to get used to, and that leads maybe to some imbalance in tone, it's nonetheless a great exercise in challenging traditional narratives. There’s an ironic tone that pulsates through the picture, and Malle also has a gallows humor in many of the plot twists (pun very much intended). It is also a rather stylish and atmospheric film.
